Love that you follow your own advice and "don't worry, be crappy" - just start and get it out there.

Great show! Jason I would like to hear you interview Perry Bates who intevented the only stand alone machine that kills airborne pathagons (such as swine flu, mold, and many others) and currently is finalizing initial funding to start production. He would love to do and interview, and I can get you in touch. You can check out more info at www.mold-sentry.com. Here is an interview he did with Denny Schaffer on his morning radio show: www.drop.io/moldsentry. Keep up the great work.

Speaking as a small business owner, I'd really love to hear your insights on making the transition from small (1 or 2 person) shop to the presenting of a proposal to VCs, to growing a business in a sane manner. Looking forward to whatever you do next.

Love the newsletter and can't wait to see the first episode of TWiSt!

Looks like you already have a lot of good format ideas above.

A Few Basic Suggestions:
1) Give startups in all stages & locations a chance to tell their story. (others who mainly focus on Twitter, Google, Facebook, etc are missing a lot of cool companies). Video Conference in ones who can't make it to the studio.

2) Have 2 or 3 startups on each week (a 30 to 60 minute show with 1 company might be too much, IMHO)

3) Have each startup give a short elevator speech, 5 minute demo and answer 5 questions (more "showing" vs. "telling")

4) Keep it light & fun - It probably shouldn't comes across like "Dragon's Den" or Simon Cowell grilling startups.

When can we be on the show?

Would love to hear about "bootstrapped" web businesses and how to gain more audience/clients by non-financial means (i.e. social networking, blogging, link trading, etc.). This is how I'm building my own little internet presence (stupid-twit.com). BTW, I do love TWIT network like many here, and enjoy the casual format and would suggest the same for this new podcast.......it is purely coincidental that TWIT shows up in my URL (trying to brand a visible/memorable name here ;-)

Best of luck!

I am recently unemployed and have developed 3-4 fundable ideas. However neither angle nor seed money is generally available. The only startups getting money are getting it through existing connections (incubator parent, EIR founder, wealthy founder, etc).

Hearing the state of the capital investment market is really important, so I would look for some VCs, maybe one of the guys from venturebeat, etc.

I think this is a great idea. As far as sponsors go, have you though about branching out from tech? Entrepreneur magazine is a pretty good read, and I'm sure there are other print based media that would be looking to tap into other readership. It would also be nice to have interviews with people who have started successful business in many different industries. Good Luck!

Jason,

I think alternating between interview-style and round-table discussions would be the best format. Maybe 30-45-min interview with remaining time devoted to round table discussion for the interview format shows.

Also, I recommend getting a good interviewer to do those interviewers. Your best asset is in those round table discussions and offering what YOU think. If you do do the interviews, be sure not to dominate the conversation and save it for the round table afterwards.

Can't wait for the show!

why not try an international co-host, or one of the ladies that leo has had on. I like the idea of an internal co-host will help to get some balance and another slant on start up issues.

thanks

Nobody else out there is talking about the 'hows' of startups; they simply comment on the occurrences. You've shown (through your email series) your motivation to help others out who are looking to form a startup - it would be great to see your podcast take a more informative/inspirational format than the existing media (techcrunch etc), which tend to, as I mentioned, simply comment on what is happening out there. Of course, there is still room for the news side of things.

Jason,

Great idea for a show. I really enjoy hearing your insights into the industry. I am particularly interested in this subject mater. My group is about to seek funding for a startup.

I will go against the grain here and recommend a shorter show. For video, I recommend 20-30 min. I am super interested in this topic, but I can not imagine finding an hour a week to lean forward. And do I really want to watch talking heads?

For a longer show, I recommend audio only. Twenty minutes and up (and up and up) fits my listening style just fine.

If you do go video, please post an audio version also. That's the one I would subscribe to, and it would be a good experiment to see what your audience prefers.

Best of luck with the show. I will be listening with great interest. I am a digital medial director/producer/animator so let me know if I can help.

Jason,
I look forward to your podcast. I really enjoy your appearances on the TWIT shows. Being part of an NYC startup I would like to hear you discuss:

1) Your experiences about different aspects of your startup experience. I am going through it now and I want to hear about specific problems you faced, mistakes you made, solutions you found.
2) Would like to hear you interview startups. But not fluff. Ask hard questions.
3) Would like you to discuss trends you are seeing covering the job market, technology options, service providers, funding, etc..

Most of all I would like you, for lack of a better term, to keep it real. Too many times successful entrepreneurs forget what its like to not have tens of thousands of Twitter followers or a few mill in the bank.

Thanks.

As someone just embarking on my own start up this would be a great. I know your audience is mainly American, but an international element would be interesting to me and I am sure much of your audience.

Hi Jason,

looking forward to your first Videopodcasting appearance. Looks pretty amazing, especially comparing the costs for the setup as mentioned in your email. More or less everybody with a bit of money can start a proper Videopodcast.
Regarding the format: 60 minutes is my personal maximum, you mentioned Leo and I m listening to his net@night podcast with Amber and sometimes the 70 minutes are hard to follow. If there is a menu or time tags, to which I can switch to, more than 60 minutes could be okay. But short, straight to the point and rememberable is better than 60 minutes of non-sense talking with a lot of commercials at the beginning or at the end. Speaking of commercials one thing that tremendously annoys me on TV are in between commercials, Meaning, if commercials than at the beginning or at the end or as product placements always during the video and make the ad phase at the beginning not too long.
In general I like the idea of a weekly startup podcast a lot, especially as I am a young guy, who is dreaming of his own company for almost a year now. But still needs some push to move his ass.
Looking forward to your next steps.

I, for one, value your opinion on the topic of startups. It's relevant, timely, and gonzo-like. You live what you speak, so I'm excited about this opportunity to hear more from you.

Will you be covering "startups" outside of the Tech industry?

Also, how will you speak to each segment in the time-line of a startup -- the various stages from idea to 2nd round funding and beyond. Each stage deserves to be covered somehow in each show. If I'm just ramping up - talk to me about that; if I'm running out of runway, speak to that. There's an inherent breadth to all of this only covered by a overwhelming sense of enthusiasm and should I say it ... hope. Hope is what we see in you no matter where we stand in this space. That and "balls". ;-)

Knowing that you are very good at single topic opinion, it will be interesting how you keep us edutained over this vast space for several weeks worth of shows and continue to give each of us increased value the more minutes we listen/view.

But just like any startup, it won't be that easy over the long haul, will it?

Hopefully it will be more then just "did you see what __fill-in this week's current hot tech startup__ did?" gossip.

And how does an Entrepreneur divorce himself/herself from their passionate ventures long enough to talk unbiased about this topic? How often will you be plugging your own interests?

Can't wait to see this unfold.

Jason,

Sounds like a fun show! Here's my suggestion for a format:

Open the show with 10-15 minutes of tech startup news, e.g., new launches, major feature launches, litigation news when that happens, major personnel moves, etc. If you report on funding, I humbly suggest keeping it to really high-profile stories. Most of the time, I couldn't care less about VC funding announcements, I'm more interested in products and people. But if they're high profile, or there's a unique angle, I wouldn't mind.

Then I would offer a 25-30 minute interview with someone from a startup.

I would close with 10-15 minutes of editorial content. What I mean is something that is more subjective than news, and doesn't focus on one company, like an interview. Could be just a roundtable discussion, could be tips for startups, could be answering viewer mail, etc.

Looking forward to the launch!

Great Idea!

Remember one thing though: There is already a techcrunch.

Jason, we are looking forward to something amazingly different and fresh from you guys. Something that adds value, something that inspires.

Jason: TWiSt sounds like a winner already. Having listened to you with Leo over the years, I think YOU can jump start the economy single-handedly with this show.

My two cents: weekly, you should do 60 minutes and feature (1) a fledgeling tech startup and (2) a promising tech startup.

Good luck and don't forget us Canadian listeners, eh?

Keep it tight and on-topic... don't go off on wild tangents - we already have TWiT for that. Take calls from your listeners, either live, or allow peeps to pre-record voice / video questions. Cater for entrepreneurs AND those who want to get something started but are hopelessly lost at the first hurdle. Cover more than just Web 2.0 startups - I'm trying to start a games company, for example, and although it is a tech startup, it does have its differences. I'd be particularly interested in how to raise modest amounts of capital - half-a-million and under - and hearing about exactly what it is that investors want to hear. Good luck... look forward to it!

Jason,
I am stoked about this show. I am a normal guy from a small town with very few connections and very limited funds who is currently in development of a startup. I would love to see:
Tips on starting a startup
Basic foundations
Monetization techniques
New startups and what they are doing right/wrong
Startup deadpool
Marketing advise
Basically any information you can give people like me on creating a successful startup. As far as the format goes, how about:
Intro
News
Tips
Startup of the week segment including analysis by you and maybe co host
Interview with a startup founder or industry maven such as yourself
Startup deadpool

As far as a partner, I would say go with the obvious...TechCrunch. Talkcrunch seems to have hit the deadpool itself so it's not like you would be competing with them.

random thoughts...
Format: keep it basic, and grow it over time so that you don't get in a rut. Break it into a couple or three segments (new startups, current state on previously covered startups, success/failure stories & analysis), and try to cover 4-6 stories in each segments. Maybe use some of the stories for interwviews, where appropriate. That'll leave you time for sponsors and what-not.

Co-Host:get someone who's been through a couple of these. Sarah Lane, maybe?

$.02 delivered...

we're a start-up - lots of ups and downs - finally gaining a bit of a footing. We are launching b2b educational shows starting Wednesdays in may. We're in it for the long haul. We are only audio/internet radio but we are 24/7. Dont have the budget to pony the money, but we do have editing capabilities and possibly (depending on your definition of producing) the producer AND We can offer the bandwidth.

jason - brilliant idea. Can't wait for the first episode. In terms of format it would be good to hear real life experiences. i.e interview other entrepreneurs about challenges they faced with their startups.

Just curious for bandwidth - have you thought about just putting the show files on S3? How do their bandwidth charges compare to the companies you listed? I'm not sure if they do advertising for hosting (although they should). The other nice thing is that bittorrent is built-in so anything you have up there can be seeded by them.

I really enjoy the quasi-freestyle that a lot of the podcasts have been doing. A few wandering segments works for me. Killer intro (think GDGT weekly) introductions, personal events, yada yada yada, news, yada yada yada, hot topic of the week, have some cool guests who are and are not completely familiar with the topic weight in on it, then wrap it up with a nice poop joke (CNet 404 anyone?).

I probably just described TWiT...minus the poop joke, but thats a killer show, the constant rotation of guests keep things colorful and interesting.

I really enjoy listener voice mail, always something interesting to be had.

Can't wait for the podcast. J.

P.S. Maybe get some perspectives from players not within the valley. East coast, no coast, foreign coast?
