This weeks guest was Atif Rafiq, head of Yahoo! Local for North America and previous founder/CEO of Covinga. He and Jason talked about the role of community building in creating a network of local business listings and also discussed Yahoo!’s overall strategy to leverage its various “horizontals.” Atif talked about a number of the ventures he’s involved in, including the upcoming Local Search Summit on July 17th.
There were three callers on “Ask Jason” this week. The first, Jonathan Johnson, wanted to know if Jason had any creative ideas for how to raise capital for his lifestyle business. Mike Stone, Jason’s second caller, wanted advice on how to effectively evaluate a competitive space and how to decide whether it was worth entering. Finally, the third caller, Greg Gerber, was looking for ways to attend entrepreneurial events/conferences without simply buying a ticket. Jason gave some great responses to these questions so make sure to watch the show and find out what he said!
On “The News with Lon Harris”, Jason gave his thoughts on the future of breaking news when discussing how quickly Michael Jackson’s passing was reported on Twitter vs. CNN. He also talked about Tesla Motors’ government loan, a lawsuit against Microsoft’s Bing, and sent security company Clear to the “Deadpool.”
Next week’s homework assignment is to read the book “How the Mighty Fall,” by Jim Collins. Maybe you can be Jason’s star student on the air and earn your ticket to the TechCrunch50.

You can download a podcast on iphone via wifi with itunes mobile app.
Excellent show as always. Wish you could Fast forward video though (in the event that the entire show doesn’t initially download and you have to refresh the page…now I have to wait at most 55 minutes before I catch up to where I was)
Jason,
Great episode, but the poker logo is unprofessional and distracting.
Please, please please do an MP3 feed.
Or at least a link to the MP3.
Each time I have to hack the code for the page to get the MP3 link and then create a web page to have a link to down load the MP3.
A bit fail when I subscribe to the MP3 feed.
@Albert: it’s right on the front page.
@Jason, great show, TWIT wasn’t enough for a Jason show, this is a perfect format, great guests, the Jason tip section is very insightful.
Hi Guys,
I’ve just the last few minutes looking for a list of your sponsors it would be awesome if you could put them on the webpage with links to their websites.
I watch TWIST on my IPhone every week. I don’t need to download it because I stream it over 3g. Apple does allow you to download podcast on your IPhone using the ITunes app. I also have an IPod adapter in my car that allows me to stream this show over my car stereo instead of regular broadcast radio. Just sharing my experience.
[...] I appeared on Jason Calacanis’s web TV show, This Week in Start-ups. You may already know Jason from his current gig as Founder of Mahalo and his successful start-up [...]
So, it’s been about 3 weeks since the last “This Week In Startups”. What’s up? You guys still doing the show?
Jason,
Love the show but one suggestion:
Can the video (post live stream) player have chapters or some kind of fast-forward button so a viewer could jump to a specific portion of the video? I clicked away momentarily while half-way through the show and had to start all over from the beginning.
I have recently found your show through the TWiT podcasts but am having problems downloading Ep 8. Itunes fails to download the file and the file from the link on this site is only 30Mb not the 78Mb as indicated. Overall I am liking the format.
