We were back on the air this afternoon with Loren Bendel, CEO of Savings.com. Jason introduced Loren as someone he has a lot to learn from as Loren knows an array of things about his vertical that have made him so successful. Loren gave some great insight into what it’s like to run a coupons and promotions company under a recession and also talked about the value of using social media practices to advance the company.
There was an eclectic set of callers this week too. The first caller, Nathan Stobezki, wanted to know if Jason had any thoughts about how to raise capital for his company. Pete Jimison, the second caller, skyped in from Switzerland with a question about the company he started with his brother. Finally, there was a great question from Gabrielle Pascoe, an old acquaintance of Jason’s from the Silicon Alley days, about how to choose the proper salary for the CEO of a new venture. As usual, each was offered a ticket to the TechCrunch50 conference in September. Send in your “Ask Jason” questions to contact@thisweekinstartups.com and maybe you too will be as lucky!
This weeks news included a discussion about the Twitter document leak on techcrunch.com and the importance of using discretion when storing company documents on the interweb. There was also a brief talk about youtube’s future business model followed with the sending off of failed company “The Printed Blog” to the “Deadpool.” Finally, Jason made a PSA to the “stupid people of the world” near the end. If you want to know what he had to say then or at any other point on the show, watch it for yourself and find out!
The next show will be two weeks from now on Friday, July 31st 2009. Because they ran out of time, you have another two weeks to do the homework (if you haven’t already) and read “How the Mighty Fall,” by Jim Collins.

You gotta quit leaving weeks off from your show if you want it to take off. I understand you might be busy, but busy isn’t an excuse for the show to not continue on. I do enjoy your show, and yourself as the host. However, should you not be available for the show, you should have someone replace you for the week. You will lose people when you miss weeks, not to mention, pissing off your advertisers. Sorry for the blunt post, but I feel its always appreciated. Cheers and best of luck!

I think the book Loren is referring too regarding being late to pick up your children is Predictably Irrational. Read it this morning so it’s fresh.
Great show Jason.
I’ve compiled a short list of the Twitter usernames of fellow entrepreneurs/listeners, who tweeted #TWiST. A list like this will by its nature never be complete but I hope that it helps for listeners to find each other.

10+ Jason! Great show. Looking forwar to the next one with Chuck.
Keep up the great work!
Loren was a great guest, really appreciated his insights. I would love to see Eric Ries and/or Steve Blank on the program, another wished for guest would be Nivi from Venturehacks. Another topic I personally would like to hear more about the legal angle of setting up a start-up, how best to structure your start up early on to make you most attractive to investors down the road.

Loving the show! Listen to it on the podcast all the time.
Any chance of getting more entrepreneurs on that are using tech to promote their service business (ie: brick and mortars)?
I’m just learning the world of internet marketing to promote my offline passions, so a lot of what you guys talk about I’m trying to implement.
Your show is awesome, and I can’t get enough!
Amazing show I think this is the best yet. Also a VERY VERY good note when you said IT people, they are secretly peeping toms at heart. I agree, a point I never thought of was when you said why would I put my web 2.0 company business plan on another web 2.0 company website. Very strong point.
Also good to hear both of your views and insight on how to achieve getting either a VC or Angel Investor.
GREAT SHOW A+++!
Cheers
Not a TWIST goes by that doesn’t answer several of my lingering questions or reinforce concepts I am pondering. TWIST #9 is another valuable contribution to the startup community.
I particularly enjoyed your discussion of CEO salaries, YouTube profitability, and your general demystification of the VC world.
My group and I are in an early development and business planning stage of our web startup. Your insights and opinions continue to inform and inspire us. Thanks for a great show!
[...] listened to a great vodcast on my way home from work last night. Jason Calacanis interviewed the CEO of savings.com Loren [...]
I’m having trouble downloading the audio versions of Ep 09, 12 and 13. The links in the RSS feed are broken, so could you also link to the mp3 from the Show notes page (no just link to the video version)?
What makes things more confusing and frustrating, the Episode number in the Feed title is NOT always the same as the title in the filename, making it hard to figure out where I am up to. Heck, Episode 17 has a filename of “…Ep1WithRyanBlockAndPeterRojas189.mp3″.
Consistency = good.
Cheers for this blogpost, I’ve learned a lot more now about mp3’s. My personal place is a directory I found somewhere on bing. It contains thousands of music files. I have added the link in that website url option. Hope to see more blogposts from you!
Well written and a great read
