TWiST #12 with Brad and John from Ustream

Play

Jason’s guests on this week’s episode were Brad Hunstable and John Ham, Co-Founder of Ustream.  If you don’t already know, Ustream is one of the best live video streaming sites on the web (and certainly our favorite here @ TWiST).  Tune in to find out where the idea came from, how they built up the platform, and what’s coming up next.

No episode next week, but make sure to tune in on the 28th for Sean Spector from GameFly.

Please don’t do that ‘Tyler has an insight’ thing any more. It ruins what have been good and informative shows.

  2. When you stated that a job application must have a cover letter as well as the resume, did you mean the cover letter has to be a separate document attached to the email, or just that the email be the cover letter itself?

  3. (A few select) Successful Canadian internet companies: Flickr, NowPublic, iStockPhoto, StumbleUpon, and PlentyofFish. Google’s CFO Patrick Pichette is Canadian, as is Jeff Skoll, co-founder of eBay. And this is not to mention Research in Motion, persistent juggernaut in the smartphone space.

    I’m just sayin’.

I hereby declare Jason Calacanis to be an honorary Canadian citizen. Stop by your local Canadian consulate to pick up your passport and a $10 discount coupon for Canadian back bacon.

Sorry for the dumb question, but where is the downloadable mp3?

    Thanks!

Love the show, but also HATE THE SHOW!

It’s too long! Think about your target audience. We are busy guys. Any time I take to listen to TWIS is time I have to steal away from other things. As it is I have to listen in bits and pieces here and there, which is not great for retention.

On a more positive note, I love all of the segments, so I wouldn’t axe any of the them. I’m just asking for a bit of editorial discipline, perhaps only do a couple of the segments each week, and rotate them.

Great show, but IMHO less is more…

Could be a stunt double for Gary Unmarried

  7. Rishit says:

Any specific reason why your video/audio on iTunes is not available in India?

  8. I haven’t been keeping up with TWIST as much over the summer since I’ve been gone on holidays a lot with spotty internet service but I’m catching up now!

This was a great show because the guests were amazing and Jason was spot on as usual.

I have said before that the show is too long, but I still enjoy every minute of it regardless.

I agree that photo sharing sites unless immensely differentiated with a sound business model have no chance of surviving. So I wasn’t surprised to hear about that Bubble company shutting their doors.

I really like how you guys are helping out entrepreneurs and startups now, it’s almost like real-time consulting with action. Very clever and well executed Jason!

these two founder guys are bores

Your audio link for this episode is broken. Can you fix that?

  11. College vs. Experience question.   Assumption “you will learn more on the job than in school.”  Totally agree.  Nobody who knows anything will argue that.

However, I didn’t hear what the caller had for idea or vision.   He sounded like he wanted an excuse to not continue with school.   There are people in life who move in a direction until they hit an obstacle, instead of finding away around it and continuing on their path, they change their path.

Simply put, all four behavior types exist in the workforce:

1:      College educated people who think too highly of themselves
2:      College educated people who rock
3:      People who dropped out who are brilliant
4:      People who dropped out who find excuses

But,  the self confidence of people who don’t finish school is horrific.
Often they have a mindset that people who graduated college ‘know something that they don’t.’  They go through life thinking that there’s a party out there and their not invited to it.  Napoleon complex, short man’s disease, whatever…  …it’s an insecurity thing and is no fun to deal with.

When looking at new hires for our company, college education is the filter.    The amount of resumes that come in is overwhelming, they have to be quickly sorted into a yes, no and maybe pile.   Non college grads often come in defensive and argue why the didn’t finish college.   It’s not a good starting point.
