Jason’s guest this week was Matt Mickiewicz, founder of Sitepoint.com and 99designs. Matt has been an entrepreneur since high school, when he founded what was the precursor to Sitepoint. Check out the entire episode to find out how he brought it all together and has become one of the most successful young entrepreneurs, without most people even knowing it.
We also had several very exciting announcements on the show today. We have several new contests/giveaways going on. There’s the TWiST Review Contest, the Incredible Audible Deal and the “We Live in Public” NY giveaway. Check out the specific pages for full details on all these great giveaways.
We also introduced a brand new segment this week – “Jason’s Shark Tank”. Two self-starting entrepreneurs had the chance to pitch Jason on their ideas and why he should invest with them. Think you have a better idea than they did – e-mail contact@thisweekinstartups.com with your pitch and you may end up on the show!

You might be underestimating the potential of augmented reality. With the proper API, anyone with any location-based datastore can sell to near-infinite niche markets (crime scene events? movie set trivia? literary history? political scandals? technology roots? retail sales events?)
And I would suggest that this will go beyond a smartphone interface and migrate to something like fashionable, clear goggles that will function as a head’s up display.
The potential is enormous.

So glad to hear about the ’sharkTank’ part of the show. I feel like and email I sent last week would have been better put into a pitch for Jason and the amazing crew at TWiST.
Love the show and been learning a lot. Having fun taking the business acumen from this show into my career in healthcare.
Keep up the great work!

Can you remember a time when you were young, talking with your Grandfather, where he was giving you some piece of advice? That’s how I explain “who is Jason Calicanis” to my friends – he’s the great wise “Grandfather-type” for technology startups that you must listen to.

Thanks for the great content!
I’ve seen many people asking how to download mp3s to listen to later and no satisfactory answer.
Is it possible or do you have to listen on your site?
It’d be great if i could listen on the bus, rather than sit on your site for 2.5 hours
There are links to the RSS feeds for downloading on the right hand side of the homepage.
Does anyone have an alternative link to this episode? I can’t manage to get it via iTunes or the links posted in the comments.
Loved this interview, very well done Jason and Matt.
I liked the talk about people from the Philippines. I’m very interested in building relationships with those who are talented from that great country.
I think that Jason would make a great ABC Shark! I think the collaboration between Robert, Kevin, and Jason would be very interesting to see.
Matt Mickiewicz did with 99 designs what craigslist did to the newspapers. We have a global economy, get used to it. As a small businessman, services like these connect me with the best labor in the planet allowing me to compete like a fortune 500 company who can hire Accenture to outsource jobs. The best labor is one that gets the job done for the lowest price.
To me, Matt’s site focused on a system that gets the job done more than the lowest price and that is just perfect. I use eLance all the time and will continue to do so but now, my logo needs go here because of the bidding style.
Great episode. Great Interview. The call in segment is my favorite.
P.S. To all you business folks that put requests on eLance to “need developer to duplicate eBay, paying $200″, I hope you burn. Come up with your own ideas and quit trying to knock others off for $200
